DEA Prohibits Two More Drugs, Moves to Ban a Third

LAW ENFORCEMENT

February 1993

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) effectively banned two more drugs by placing them in Schedule I, and temporarily banned another pending final review (No byline, "DEA Places Two Substances in Schedule I and Proposes a Third," Drug Enforcement Report, 1/25/93, p. 7).

The January 14 administrative order by DEA Administrator Robert Bonner placed 2,5-Dimethoxy-4-ethylamphetamine (DOET) and cathinone into Schedule I, and temporarily placed in Schedule I alpha-ethyltryptamine (ET).

DOET and ET are psychedelic drugs, while cathinone is the main psychoactive component of khat, Catha edulis, which is chewed in parts of Africa and the Arab world as a stimulant for much the same reasons Americans consume coffee and tea. DOET and cathinone are regulated by the United Nations Convention on Psychotropic Substances.
