Oklahoma City Council Members Refuse Drug Tests

DRUG TESTING

February 1993

Oklahoma City council members voted 6-1 against subjecting themselves to the drug testing required of some municipal employees (John Parker, "Council Members Refuse Drug Tests," Daily Oklahoman, 1/27/93, p. 7)

The January 26 vote prompted an outcry from the sponsor, Jack Cornett, who was absent because of an emergency. "The city asks certain employees to take drug tests, and those that voted against this showed they were above asking what we ask our own employees," Cornett said later. Three council members, however, including Cornett, said they would voluntarily submit to urine testing and reveal the results.
