Drug Tests Show Decline in Illicit Drug Use by U.S. Work Force

WORKPLACE

March 1993

Analysis of more than 2.5 million urine samples showed that illicit drug use by the U.S. work force declined for the fourth year in a row (From news services, "Worker Drug Use Declines," Daily Oklahoman, 2/11/93, 2C).

The trend is drawn from the drug testing index compiled by SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories. The index also showed that transportation workers continued to test lower for illicit drug use than the general work force.

Of the total work force, only 8.76 percent tested positive for an illicit drug in 1992, compared to 8.81 percent in 1991.
