Mexican Cardinal Killed in Shootout by Traffickers at Guadalajara Airport

INTERNATIONAL

June 1993

Roman Catholic cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas died in the crossfire of a shootout between rival drug dealers at Guadalajara airport May 24, in the latest incident suggesting the degree to which drug cartels are affecting Mexican society (Chronicle Wire Services, "Cardinal Gunned Down In Guadalajara: Five Others Also Slain In Drug Shootout Crossfire," San Francisco Chronicle, 5/24/93, A1).

Posadas was one of six people at the scene who died, and did not appear to be the target. Two of the gunmen were subsequently arrested. See related item below.
