Susan Chavez Hongisto, wife of former San Francisco Police Chief Richard Hongisto, died September 24 after smoking crack with a friend (Keay Davidson, "Ex-police Chief's Wife Dies After Using Crack," Washington Times, Sept. 26, 1994, p. A7). Details of her death were not immediately available, but Mr. Hongisto said he believes she used the drug to "teach me a lesson" after they quarreled. Her death was accidental, he said, as she was currently taking asthma medication. "I'd sign a bill right now to cut the hands off drug dealers," he said in an emotional statement. "It's hard for me to imagine loving someone as much as I loved her. I don't hold out hopes of being that happy again."
